The Luang Prabang Orphanage School
The Luang Prabang Orphanage School is located just about 5 kms from the historic centre of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The combined school and orphanage has been founded in 1986 but has led a quiet existence since then. Very few people seem to know about it.
The school has 5 classes of primary education and 3 classes of secondary education. At the time of our visit the school enrolls 297 children, 97 girls and 200 boys. There are 34 teachers, 24 female and 10 male.
Of these children 69 are orphans. The other children either don't have a father or mother or are simply abandoned. All of them live on the premises of the school, in very simple barracks.
Some of the buildings have been donated by charities. The Lao government donates a food budget of 90 000 Kip (8 USD) per month, according to Mrs. Toun Bhunnaphon, the deputy director.
The children have lunch and dinner at the school. There is not enough budget for breakfast.
